Shopify for beauty and cosmetics brands: where the work actually is
Shopify itself is rarely the problem for a beauty brand. Variants, discounts, Arabic, Tabby and Tamara all work. What separates a good beauty store from a template is the part a theme doesn't do for you: helping someone choose a shade they can't try on, explaining what's in the bottle, and bringing them back when it runs out.
That is what we build for UAE skincare, make-up, haircare and fragrance-adjacent brands selling direct.
Shade finders and skin quizzes
A shade finder is only as good as the product data behind it. Before we design anything, we structure the catalogue:
- Shades as variants, each with a swatch (colour value or image), depth and undertone stored in metafields.
- Skin type, concern and finish as structured attributes, so the same data drives the quiz, collection filters and product badges.
- Quiz results saved to the customer profile, so follow-up emails recommend the right routine rather than the bestseller.
Small ranges can use a quiz app. Larger ranges, or brands that want the quiz to feel like part of the store, usually get a custom theme section reading those metafields. We built LensPath, our own Shopify app, to walk optical customers through lens choices; a shade or skin-type finder is the same kind of guided-selection problem.
Routines, bundles and sampling
Beauty sells in sets: a morning routine, a starter kit, a Ramadan or Eid gift box. Shopify's own Bundles app is free on all plans and handles fixed bundles while tracking stock on each component (Shopify Help Center). Build-your-own routines with tiered pricing need a little more work, usually Shopify Functions or a dedicated bundle app.
Sampling is where beauty brands win repeat customers or give margin away. We set it up deliberately:
- A free sample with orders above a threshold, added automatically and limited to one per order.
- Paid discovery or travel sizes that come with a code redeemable against the full size.
- Sample choice tied to quiz results, so the sample matches the customer's skin type.
Subscriptions for replenishment
Cleansers, serums and haircare are natural subscription products. There is a UAE-specific catch. Shopify's Subscriptions app only works with certain payment gateways: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe (for select merchants). Local gateways such as Telr or PayTabs are not on that list.
Shopify Payments is available to UAE stores on the Advanced and Plus plans only. So on Basic or Grow with a local gateway, automatic recurring charges through Shopify Subscriptions are off the table. The options are moving to Advanced for Shopify Payments, or replenishment reminders by email or WhatsApp with a one-click reorder link. We'll tell you which makes sense for your volumes. Ingredients, INCI lists and Arabic product content
UAE beauty shoppers read labels, often in two languages. We give ingredient information its own structure rather than burying it in a description:
| Content | How we store it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full INCI list | Dedicated metafield, shown in its own tab | Shoppers checking for allergens find it in one place |
| Key actives and "free from" attributes | Structured metafields | Drive filters such as fragrance-free or for sensitive skin |
| How to use, warnings, period after opening | Metafields per product | Consistent layout across the range, easy to translate |
| Arabic descriptions and URLs | Translated content with translated handles | Arabic pages can rank in their own right, with hreflang |
INCI names stay in their standard international form; descriptions, usage and warnings are translated, and we check every template in right-to-left layout. We also keep product copy within cosmetic claims. Wording that sounds like a treatment ("cures acne", "heals eczema") can move a product into a different regulatory category, so it's a question for your regulatory consultant, not for us.
Product registration: confirm it before you list
Cosmetics and personal care products sold in the UAE generally need to be registered or certified before they go on sale, online included. Dubai Municipality registers cosmetics, perfumes and personal care products through its Montaji system, which shoppers can also use to look products up. Imported products may also need a conformity certificate under the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology's Emirates Conformity Assessment Program (ECAS).
What applies depends on the emirate, the product and the claims you make, so confirm with the authority or a registration consultant. We don't handle registration. We do make sure the store can hold a product as a draft until its approval is in, and can show registration details on the product page if you choose to.

Payments, influencer codes and delivery
- Tabby and Tamara with instalment messaging on product pages and in the cart, alongside cards and Apple Pay.
- Cash on delivery with rules, for example prepaid only above a set order value or for repeat refusers.
- Influencer codes: one code per creator, with usage limits and expiry dates so codes that leak onto coupon sites don't run forever, plus UTM links so sales are attributed correctly. Shopify Collabs or an affiliate app if you run a larger creator programme.
- Delivery: same-day or next-day zones in Dubai, emirate-level rates elsewhere, and shipping rules for liquids, aerosols and heat-sensitive products.
How we work
- Scoping call: your range, channels, current platform and what's not working.
- Written scope and quote: every project is scoped and quoted individually, so you know exactly what's included before anything starts.
- Build: product data model first, then theme, quiz, bundles, payments and Arabic content. See Shopify development in Dubai.
- Launch: test orders on every payment method, tracking checks, redirects if you're moving platforms.
- Support: seasonal drops, new ranges and fixes, through Shopify maintenance and support.
Is this right for you?
We work with a small number of brands at a time, and it tends to fit when:
- You own the brand or hold exclusive distribution, and your products are registered or going through registration.
- You want a store your team owns and can run, not a template you rent from an agency.
- Guided selling, repeat purchase and Arabic content matter to how you sell.
