An eyewear ecommerce website is a configurator, not a catalogue
Selling sunglasses online is ordinary ecommerce. Selling prescription glasses isn't. The frame is only half the order: the lens is built from choices the customer makes, priced by your rules, and checked against a prescription before it reaches the lab. Most themes and templates stop at the frame, which is why so many optical stores end up finishing orders over WhatsApp.
We know this category from the inside. We built the Shopify online arm for Dubai Optical / Opti-Vision, a multi-branch UAE optical retailer, including the prescription and lens flows and an ERP/POS integration that syncs stock, prices and orders with the stores' back office. We also built LensPath ↗, our own Shopify app for lens customisation.
What a Shopify optical store needs
| Need | How we build it on Shopify |
|---|---|
| Frame + lens configurator | Lens type (single vision, progressive, reading), index or thickness, coatings, tints and photochromic options, each priced from your lens price list and added to the cart with the frame. LensPath covers most retailers; unusual lens rules get a custom build. |
| Prescription capture | SPH, CYL and Axis per eye, plus ADD and PD where the lens needs them. Customers type values, upload a photo of the prescription, or choose "send later" so the sale isn't blocked. |
| Prescription validation | Values limited to real ranges and steps, CYL that requires an Axis, progressives that require an ADD. Orders that fail checks are flagged for staff before they go to the lab. |
| Contact-lens subscriptions | Replenishment on the pack's wear cycle through Shopify Subscriptions or another subscription app, with reminder emails and the prescription date stored on the customer record. |
| Branch stock and click-and-collect | Each branch is a Shopify location with its own stock, pickup in store per branch and optional transfers between branches. Quantities come from your ERP or POS, not a spreadsheet. |
| Eye-test booking | Branch, date and time, contact details and a confirmation email; staff see bookings in one place. LensPath includes this. |
| Virtual try-on | A third-party try-on app or widget. Worth it for sunglasses and fashion frames when you have clean frame data; less useful for a catalogue without it. |
| Payments | Tabby and Tamara on high-ticket frames and progressive lenses, cards and Apple Pay, and cash on delivery with verification. Details on our UAE payment gateway page. |
The lens data is the real project
The configurator is the visible part. The work behind it is turning your lens price list into rules: which indices are available for which prescriptions, which coatings combine, which frames can take progressives, what a tint costs on a high-index lens. We map that once, with your optometrists, so the website quotes the same price the branch would.
The lens choices and prescription travel with the order as structured data, so your lab or back office reads exactly what to make. Where the business runs an ERP or POS, orders flow into it and stock flows back. That's the part generic eyewear templates never show.
Insurance and direct billing: the honest version
Many UAE customers expect to use health insurance for glasses. In practice, eligibility checks and direct billing happen in store, through the insurer or its administrator, and Shopify checkout has no built-in way to approve an insurance claim. We don't pretend otherwise. What works online: let customers flag that they're insured when they book or order, route them to a branch, and keep online prices as cash prices. You keep the sale; staff handle the claim where they already do.
Contact lenses: check the rules first
Contact lenses are regulated products in the UAE, and the rules on selling them online can change. Check the current rules with the regulator before you list them. Once you know the requirements, we build the controls they call for, such as prescription capture, product restrictions and limits on where you ship.
How we work
- Scoping call — we look at your lens price list, branches, ERP or POS, payment setup and how orders reach the lab today.
- Written quote — every project is scoped and quoted individually, so you get a fixed scope, timeline and price in writing before anything starts.
- Build — theme and design (see Shopify web design), lens configurator, prescription rules, branch locations, integrations and payments, built on a development store.
- Launch — test orders with real prescriptions through to the lab, a walk-through for branch staff, then go live.
- Support — fixes, lens price updates and new features through Shopify support, so the store stays in step with the branches.
Is this right for you?
Good fit: optical retailers with one or more UAE branches that want to sell prescription glasses online, eyewear brands that add lenses to frames, and opticians replacing a WooCommerce or custom optical store website that staff work around rather than with.
Not a fit: if you only sell sunglasses with no lens options, a well-chosen theme will do most of the job and you may not need us.
What we need from you: your lens price list and availability rules, frame data (sizes, colours, which frames take which lenses), the branch list, access to your ERP or POS, and a person on your side who can answer optical questions quickly.
