A perfume ecommerce website has to sell a scent nobody can smell
Fragrance is bought on trust, memory and occasion. Online, the customer can't spray it, so the store has to do the work a good shop assistant does: suggest by mood and notes, make trying low-risk, and make gifting easy. Then it has to get a bottle of flammable liquid to the customer legally, which is where many fragrance stores come unstuck.

Shipping fragrance: alcohol, oud oil and bakhoor aren't the same
Alcohol-based perfume is treated as dangerous goods for air transport. DHL notes that perfumery products with flammable solvents are listed as UN 1266 and classed as a Class 3 flammable liquid under IATA rules, with a shipper's declaration, specific packaging and hazard labels. Aramex puts it simply: perfumes are considered dangerous goods in the logistics world. In practice, international orders may need a dangerous-goods service, quantity limits or ground transport, and some standard services won't take them at all.
Oud oil and attar are usually alcohol-free, but carriers classify by the product's safety data sheet, not by its name. Bakhoor is a solid, so it sits under different rules again. Ask your courier to confirm each product type before you promise delivery to a country.
On Shopify we turn the answer into settings: separate shipping profiles for alcohol-based SKUs, rates only on carrier services that accept them, and markets where those products simply aren't offered, so customers can't place an order you can't ship.
COD, prepaid and GCC orders
Cash on delivery is still expected by many UAE buyers, but it's expensive on gifts and high-value bottles: a refused parcel costs shipping both ways. We usually keep COD for domestic orders under a set value, verify COD orders before dispatch, and push prepaid with cards, Apple Pay, Tabby and Tamara on gift sets. For Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, Shopify Markets handles local currencies and pricing. The constraint is rarely the store; it's which of your products can legally fly to each country.
How we work
- Scoping call — we go through your range, gifting, current courier accounts and where you want to ship.
- Written quote — every project is scoped and quoted individually, so you get a fixed scope, timeline and price in writing before anything starts.
- Build — design, product data (notes, families, concentrations), bundles, gifting fields, Arabic content, shipping profiles and payments.
- Launch — test orders for each product type and destination, courier labels checked, then go live ahead of your next seasonal peak rather than during it.
- Support — seasonal campaign set-up, new launches and fixes through Shopify support.
Is this right for you?
Good fit: established UAE fragrance and oud brands with their own products, a clear identity and plans for GCC or wholesale, who want the store built properly and owned by them.
Not a fit: dropshipping fragrance or reselling grey-market bottles. We won't build for it.
What we need from you: a product list with notes and concentrations, a safety data sheet for each fragrance (your courier will ask for it), photography, courier accounts, and Arabic copy or a translator we can brief.
